Our Another-New-York city girl Michelene has a talent for vintage finds. She started collecting and reworking vintage while modelling throughout Europe. When she got to New York she started selling online. But what she really wanted was to create a space for vintage as well as a space for Caribbean designers and artists to showcase their work. So she did! In the heart of the Lower East Side, Studio Dem Vintage invites you to explore a curated collection that blurs the lines between classic and contemporary. Can you tell us about how you got inspired to start your own vintage store?
While modeling throughout Europe I started collecting and reworking vintage. When I got to New York I started selling online, but I really wanted to create a space for vintage as well as a space for Caribbean designers and artists to showcase their work.
What drives you to scout all the treasures in your vintage business?
It feels like an adventure. I love traveling to new places and thrifting, especially with my husband who’s an artist. He loves doing it as well. There are so many untold stories in vintage clothing and objects. I like the history of old thing, and I like giving them a new life.
You are creative in giving your vintage pieces new looks with paint. How did you get this idea
My husband is a painter, and we both love creating together. We wanted to make pieces that felt personal and unique.
Which items are key for upcoming spring summer?
Unique statement pieces that feel like you’re wearing a piece of art. Color! High waisted trousers. Really just whatever makes you feel good.
